Description: I am excited to announce my Eagle Project which undertakes 2 Kestrel bird boxes at Orinda Oaks Open Space. Our aim is to address the declining population of Kestrel birds by providing additional nesting options for successful breeding and population growth.
Given a carefully designed Kestrel bird box diagram, inspired by experienced scouts and reservation managers. Scouts will work on the formation of the Posts and Boxes on Day 1.
These boxes will have dimensions of approximately 10 inches wide and 10 inches thick, featuring a small entrance hole and a ventilation system for the birds’ comfort.
To ensure stability and longevity, the Scouts will cement the bird boxes into the ground, providing secure nesting sites protected from predators and harsh weather. (Day 2) By using durable materials like wood or metal, the boxes will withstand the elements for many years.
The Kestrel bird boxes project holds significance beyond immediate nesting needs. Kestrels are natural predators that help maintain a balanced ecosystem by feeding on insects and small mammals. Increasing the Kestrel population will reduce pest species, minimizing damage to crops and plants.
This project presents a fantastic opportunity for Scouts to earn 4-5 service hours, which will contribute towards their rank advancement. By actively participating in the Kestrel bird boxes initiative at Orinda Oaks Open Space, Scouts can demonstrate their dedication to community service and environmental stewardship. These service hours will not only count towards their individual advancement but also highlight their commitment to making a positive impact on the Kestrel population and the ecosystem as a whole.
To ensure the comfort of our volunteers during the project, bottled water or other beverages, along with snack items like chips, pizza and granola bars, will be provided.
